The Harlow Golfing Society (founded in 1953) home course is the Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club.

The Society aims to provide enjoyable golf coupled with good fellowship for golfers, over the age of 21, who are members of a golf club (with an official handicap). Members are expected to play on at least 2 occasions each year.

The Society meets every Wednesday afternoon throughout its annual playing season of April to September. In addition to the home events, there are 4 away days.

A prospective new member needs to be proposed and seconded by a Society member for acceptance by the HGS Committee. There is no joining fee but a new member must purchase a Society tie (£8.00).

The current annual subscription is £30.00. However for those who are not members of BSGC, a green fee is payable on each occasion they play. There is a concessionary rate for the first 5 rounds played in each season.

Guests (at the concessionary green fee rate) are most welcome. (An individual may only be a guest on 5 occasions each season.)

At the beginning of each season, members receive a fixture card setting out the starting timings, the venues, the events (type of competition).

  • For home events, the first tee is reserved from 13.30 to 15.30. Tee times are organised by a ‘’name draw’ at 13.00.
  • After the golf, members have a dinner at which the Captain presents the prizes (including golf balls for the runners up) and trophies as well as announcing the revisions to the Society handicaps. (The dress code for dinner is jackets and Society ties or smart casual, no golfing attire)
  • There are a variety of competition types (Stableford, Medal etc.) including 6 qualifying competitions where the cards are formally submitted for club handicap adjustments. (All competitions are played off the yellow tees.)
  • Members play for 20 trophies over the whole season. Pro Shop/Bar vouchers to the value of £20 plus golf balls are given to the winners/runners up on the day.
  • Revisions to the Society handicaps (which only last for the one season) are intended to generate winners from across the whole membership.
The season ends with an Annual Lunch in October to which guests can be invited.

Further details can be obtained from the Society’s Hon. Secretary: Mr Peter White Tel. No. 07866801946
