Centenary

Sir Walter Gilbey, at the cost of a huge sum of money at the time, £20,000, built Bishop's Stortford Golf Club and opened it on June 11th 1910 when an exhibition match was played between the greatest golfers of the era, James Braid, Harry Vardon, J H Taylor and Amauld Massey. We are very proud to be celebrating our Centenary this year and plan to do so over the period of 100 days in June to September, here is is a brief overview of what is happening in 2010. Full details of events and booking forms will be posted on the website when available.

 

Golf Events

 

8th/9th June PGA East Anglian Open-a two day order of merit event. Previous winners are Sir Michael Bonallack and Ian Poulter. Tees will be open from approx. 3pm each day-details TBC.

10th June Centenary Pro Am

13th June Men's Centenary Medal

15th June Ladies Centenary Cup

23rd June HGS-v-The Bishops, Centenary Match.

2nd July Centenary Match-v-Old Fold Manor

3rd July Trick Shot Display, by Kevin Carpenter, World renowned exponent of the art. Skills Challenge, Fun Fair Stalls and BBQ

18th July Mixed Past Captains Match

22nd July A & E-v-Crab & Lobster

8th August Cross Country Competition-Teams of 4 play anytime as many times as you like throughout the day on our challenging 9 hole layout. The course will be closed all day to normal play, although everyone can play in this. Hole example; 1st Tee off from old tee to the side of the 18th, play down 18 and onto the first green.

12th August Junior Centenary Cup

20th August HGU Seniors Championship-36 holes course will be closed.

28th August Night Golf Competition and food-Play the course in the dark on our night golf layout!

5th September British Hickory Society Match.

 

Social Events

 

As per a normal year there is a busy schedule of social events planned already. Also all of the above Golf Events are major social events too. Here are the additional Centenary functions, which do not include golf, you should be aware of;

11th June Gala Dinner with guest speakers

24th June Community Lunch

19th August Bridge Day and Lunch

18th September Past Captains Dinner

 

Centenary Book

 

Many members are aware that a commemorative book is in preparation. The book, a handsome hardback illustrated record of the club's first hundred years will be released in April and will be available from the office to all members who have paid their subscription for 2010
